Testimonies Fund

Friends are encouraged to make donations and bequeath legacies to the fund.

The fund enables Friends and other organisations to put our Quaker Testimonies (peace, simplicity, equality, integrity and religious witness) into action.

We are particularly interested in projects which focus on problem solving, preferably addressing root causes rather than quick fixes.

Grants have varied from $300 to $23,000 with most grants being under $5,000.

MAKING A BEQUEST TO QUAKERS IN AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND

Thank you for considering making a bequest to Quakers in Aotearoa New Zealand; a legacy which can be used to make a difference. Bequests enable our work for changing people’s lives and creating a peaceful, sustainable world, and a just society for all.
We encourage you to direct your bequest to a specific Quaker fund or funds. This greatly simplifies the administration of the bequest. You can also indicate your intentions in more detail to assist us to best meet your wishes.
You may wish to discuss your thoughts and plans with family members, or with your Monthly Meeting Clerk, Pastoral & Spiritual Care Committee, or other Friends.

Quaker Charities where you might direct your legacy

The Religious Society of Friends Aotearoa New Zealand Trust Board (the Trust Board) holds the following funds:

  • Friends Mutual Assistance Fund of the Yearly Meeting of Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Meeting House Building Fund of the Yearly Meeting of Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Quaker Education Fund of the Yearly Meeting of Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Testimonies Fund of the Yearly Meeting of Aotearoa New Zealand
  • General Purposes Fund of the Religious Society of Friends Aotearoa New Zealand Trust Board

Other Quaker Charities

  • Quaker Peace and Service Trust
  • Monthly Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Whanganui Educational Settlement Trust ("WEST") of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Aotearoa NZ

If your bequest is wholly or partly for a Quaker fund that is not held by the Trust Board, that portion will be transferred to the nominated charity.

We strongly encourage you to consult a lawyer to obtain qualified legal advice about the types of bequest you might make, and especially about the specific wording of your bequest.

It is also important for the execution of your will that you use the full legal name for Quaker Trust funds in Aotearoa New Zealand.

It is:    Religious Society of Friends Aotearoa New Zealand Trust Board

Keeping it flexible

We have also found it is helpful if a bequest contains words such as:
“If it is not practicable to use the bequest for the stated purpose, it may be used for the general purposes of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Aotearoa New Zealand [or a specified body or fund].”
Then, if the original purpose changes over time and is no longer needed, your legacy can still be used to make a practical difference.

What might that look like?

You would be bequeathing to The Religious Society of Friends Aotearoa New Zealand Trust Board, (Registered Charity Number CC26122), for the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Aotearoa New Zealand.

You would be expressing the wish, but without creating a binding obligation, that your gift be used for the work of a fund or several funds, or for the general purposes of the Trust Board, or for a separate Quaker charity.
Your bequest could be a specific sum, or a proportion of a residuary estate, or a whole estate.

The Trust Board will acknowledge receipt of the bequest to your executors.

Letting us know

You may want to advise the Trust Board of your intended bequest. This is not legally binding, simply a statement of your present intentions.
If you would like to let us know, please email bequest@trust.quakers.nz  in confidence.
