Compassionate Communities
Many of us are familiar with the saying “it takes a village to raise a child”. It’s also true to say that it takes a community to support someone who is dying. Our communities in the western world have become deskilled, relying heavily on professional and statutory services which are often overstretched and cannot provide the wrap -around care which is an essential part in creating a good death for ourselves and our loved ones. Compassionate Communities across the world form part of an international grassroots movement which aims to reskill communities and is starting to develop here in New Zealand. This weekend will open up opportunities to be part of this essential grassroots movement which focuses on the end of life, to restore it to its time -honoured place in our communities.
