Climate Emergency Correspondent's Newsletter

This newsletter is not an official Quaker publication. It aims to assist Aotearoa NZ Quakers’ knowledge of action and thinking around climate change, and therefore reflects a variety of views.

"When we think we know people, we can fall into the trap of not listening and not asking questions. We can be tempted to write people off as intransigent or even irrational. We must practice good discipline or listening, asking, and reflecting."
Kay Harrison, Aotearoa New Zealand Climate Change Ambassador, Yearly Meeting, 2024

The Quaker Climate Emergency Correspondent newsletter provides updates on climate action and policy relevant to Aotearoa New Zealand Quakers. It emphasizes collective responsibility for climate challenges, sharing insights on both local and international efforts.

Summary of Climate Emergency Correspondent's Newsletter 2025 No. 2 (28 Huitānguru)

This month's newsletter explores climate issues, actions, and discussions relevant to Aotearoa New Zealand. It starts with an observation on how black walls absorb more heat, prompting thoughts about urban heat effects.

Key topics include:

  • The role of aerosols in climate change and how reduced air pollution may worsen global warming.
  • Actions to take, including petitions, courses, and recommended resources.
  • Updates on NZ’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement, with concerns over emissions reduction progress and shifting focus from mitigation to adaptation.
  • A storytelling section illustrating the tension between economic growth, environmental impact, and government decision-making.

The newsletter concludes with a Quaker call for individual climate action and links to resources on biodiversity and relaxation.
