Quaker Tapestry Project
The Quaker Tapestry project was stitched by men, women and children from 15 countries between 1981 and 1996. The series of tapestries tell the story of 400 years of Quaker history and influence throughout the world. The original panels are mostly held in an exhibition in Kendal in the Lake District of England, but Quakers Aotearoa possess framed photographs of 63 of them. They are held at the Whanganui Settlement where they are are an inspiration to visitors and residents. They are a marvellous resource for New Zealand both for the craftwork and the insights they portray. They provide food for thought and discussion.
These are high quality reproductions, almost full-size panels. They are invaluable for eduation, inspiration and outreach especially if used in connection with the illustrated book Pictorial Guide to the Quaker Tapestry. The photos are available for Meetings to borrow, in groups or as a full set for Meetings to display, so you might see them in your local Quaker Meeting venue.
A Tapestry Curator arranges packaging and dispatch of the photos. The Caretaker's work also includes keeping records of the location of the photographs, providing advice and other resources available for exhibitions to ensure that these amazing panels are appreciated not only by Quakers but also by those in the wider community. You can contact the Tapestry Caretaker at The Settlement tapestry@ym.quakers.nz.
