2026 Swarthmore Lecture. The diverse mixture of characteristics visible in early Quakers that produced several creative tensions are explored. These include the tension between inward experience and outward tradition, the quietist and the charismatic. The author argues that engaging with these issues can help Friends better appreciate diversity in the world Quaker family and also help respond to dilemmas today.
